I think I understand what happened in this movie:
A husband killed a lot of women who looked kind of like his wife because his wife didn't believe in an afterlife. Then he killed himself.
I've read some other reviews and summaries trying to figure out if I'm in the ballpark. It's a big ballpark.
Some people think the wife almost died and saw an evil spirit, and the evil spirit commanded the husband to kill the wife. The husband killed women who looked like his wife because ... the evil spirit was kind of face blind? I guess?
Others thought the wife almost died and saw Nothing. It was this personification of nothing that compelled the husband to kill.
As a nihilist, I suspect I have a cozier relationship with nothing than most people do.
I was engaged by the movie. It looked and sounded good. I liked the performances. But the ending was not satisfying. I liked the ending I was writing in my head better:
The lake that these houses are built on is really Crystal Lake, and Owen didn't kill any of these women. It was Jason all along! Backdoor sequel!
